New Vision Charter School

Today i had the pleasure of visiting New Vision Charter School. I was asked a very interesting question. Is a Daddy long Legs a spider? The answer according to http://spiders.ucr.edu/daddylonglegs.html is Yes and No "The creatures most correctly called daddy-longlegs are in their own separate Order which is Opiliones. They are characterized by having one basic body segment which shows segmentation on the posterior portion, at most 2 eyes and all 8 legs attach to the pill-like body segment.""Another creature often called daddy-longlegs are actually spiders. These long-legged spiders are in the family Pholcidae. Previously the common name of this family was the cellar spiders but arachnologists have also given them the moniker of "daddy-longlegs spiders" because of the confusion generated by the general public. Because these arachnids are spiders, they have 2 body basic body parts (cephalothorax and abdomen), have 8 eyes most often clumped together in the front of the body, the abdomen shows no evidence of segmentation, have 8 legs all attached to the front most body part (the cephalothorax) and make webs out of silk." So there you have it.....both facts seem to be equally true....Thank you for inviting me to your school.....I truly enjoyed it:)

Bug Songs

Hello everyone! I want to start by saying Thank You to Enviropest (My Sponsor), Butterfly Pavillion, all the schools, libraries, and other venues who have invited Bug Songs to do performances. We would not be here if it were not for all of you! I will be posting here every so often as I have time to keep you up on Bug Songs news and tell you stories or share stories. You can share bug stories and tales of your own by posting comments. At the end of this month I will be going to Penn State University in State College, PA. to do a performance at the Great Insect Fair. PA. is my home state (I grew up in Erie, PA) so I am really looking forward to going! I guess there will be lots of people there and it should be lots of fun!
